Growing Up In Detroit

Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, New York but raised in Detroit. She first gained recognition at the age of 10, when she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At the age of 12, Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records.

Gladys Knight known as the Empress of Soul was married to Barry Hankerson, the uncle of Aaliyah. She was involved in Aaliyah's earliest performances. Glady’s knew Aaliyah when she was a little girl, and she mentioned how she watched her grow up. She knew Aaliyah had a lot of talent. Aaliyah, like her aunt Gladys Knight, became a star. She became the Princess of R&B.

Aaliyah grew up in Detriot like Stevie Wonder and Smokie Robinson just to name a few. Smokie was born in Detroit. and Stevie was born in Saginaw. Yes, both Saginaw and Detroit are cities located in the state of Michigan. Saginaw is located in central Michigan while Detroit is located in southeastern Michigan.

Aaliyah, like her Aunt Gladys, was not born in Michigan. Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, New York and Gladys was born in Atlanta Georgia. Aaliyah had the Hitsville energy though she did not sing at Motown. Like the Motown stars, Aaliyah worked hard to make it to the top.
